A long history of forward thinking.

Sylvia Group’s founder, Louis G. Sylvia, launched the agency in 1950 after working for a national insurance company. He felt he could offer better customer service on his own – and he did. He started with personal lines, working out of his home in New Bedford. His son Vincent P. Sylvia Sr. joined the company in 1960 and became President in 1970. Vincent’s daughter Maureen Sylvia Armstrong joined the agency full-time upon graduation from Boston College in 1986, succeeded her father as president and CEO in 1998, purchased the agency in 2003 and expanded the business exponentially, from a team of 10 to Sylvia Group’s current size of almost 50 employees.

As 2020 began, Sylvia Group entered a new era, with Maureen and her partners – John Beauregard, Rosemarie S. Lopes and Maureen’s son Andrew Armstrong – guiding the agency’s entry into Alera Group, a national firm that shares Sylvia Group’s passion for innovation, service and corporate philanthropy.
